Geopolitical/SBU/Function overview:
The British Council has operated in Sudan since 1948 with the aim of building cultural and educational relations between Sudan and the UK. British Council Sudan is based in Khartoum and its offer includes the largest English Teaching Centre in Sub Sahara Africa, the delivery of IELTS, professional and schools’ examinations, project management on behalf of major donors, and the design and implementation of its own cultural relations projects. We aim to increase our impact by working more closely with Sudanese and UK partners.
Wider Context and Programme: The British Council programme in capacity building, conferences, workshops, events and activities covers a wide area of cultural relations initiatives. Celebrating its 70th anniversary in Sudan in 2018, the focus of cultural relations activities is ‘realising Sudanese potential’. A recently introduced central pillar is the ‘Social Enterprise Sudan’ programme which focuses on creating opportunities and enabling young people, within their communities, to fulfil their potential by improving their employability, resilience and networks, through building mutually beneficial partnerships between the UK and Sudan.
The Role:
As part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the Director Programmes and Partnerships will be responsible for providing leadership across a programme portfolio of over £1 million. You will provide strategic guidance to programme delivery and will lead on the design and implementation of Sudan’s pursuit strategy for delivering partner income, co-funding and full cost recovery work in Education & Society and the Arts as this is critical to the achievement of Sudan’s income and impact growth targets.
Main opportunities/challenges for this role:
You will be accountable to the Country Director for the leadership and quality assurance of country programmes, ensuring alignment to regional and corporate plans, compliance with British Council planning and financial regulations, and ensuring sustainability and continued income and impact growth through Business Development.
You will provide programme direction and strategic guidance to the Programmes Team, including leadership of the Social Enterprise Sudan programme, and Education, Society and Arts programmes. As a member of the country’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT), to look for synergy across other Strategic Business Units
You will direct the work of the Business Development Manager to identify, manage and develop relationships with clients/customers, partners and other stakeholders, which support the development and implementation of British Council strategy, and also take lead responsibility for monitoring, challenging and evaluating British Council projects.
Role Requirements:
High level of Arabic and English language (IELTS 7 or above equivalent).
University Degree, a master’s in development or humanities is desirable.
Proven understanding and experience of designing, delivering and evaluating programmes and projects with an emphasis on the needs of major clients and customers.
Proven success of leading a team in an international context.
Operating successfully in a complex, multi-cultural context Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Highly organised and deadline oriented
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Experience of managing large scale donor funded programmes
